The Miracle is in Your Mouth

“The Miracle is in Your Mouth”

Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.

Proverbs 18:21 (MSG)

The Bible paints a very clear picture for us that there is power in our words. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. In Genesis 1, we see just how much power there is when God speaks. Throughout Genesis 1, 2, and 3, we see God speaking, and when God spoke, the miracle of creation happened. Just as God spoke and created, he then gave Adam the authority to speak and to name.

One day Eve took the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and she ate. Then she gave it to Adam and he ate. He said nothing. Through the silence of a man, sin, death and disease entered the earth.

Abraham was a friend of God, and when his wife was 90 years old in Genesis 16:2, she suggested that he sleep with one of the servants in order to have children. Abraham said nothing but heeded her words.

The Bible says that Lot was vexed by the wickedness that went on in Sodom and Gomora. But, he did not say or do anything. God was gracious and delivered him out of Sodom and Gomora. His wife, however, looked back as they were leaving, and it led to her demise--she turned into a pillar of salt. All it takes for evil to prevail in our lives is for us to say nothing. Life and death are in our tongues. We can choose to speak either life or death, blessing or destruction over our lives. The choice is ours.

There are four things we need to start saying:

1. Say something to God in prayer.

Adam, Abraham, Lot, and his family failed to say anything to God about some of their most important life decisions. If we want to activate the miracles that God has for us, we must first say something to God. The best way that we can pray is to go to God with our words. Hosea 14:2 tells us that any words will do when we are talking to God.

Sometimes we think that God does not have the emotional intelligence to handle what we are thinking or feeling, but God knows everything about us and created us for a specific purpose. If we're not expressing ourselves to God, it might be because we have bought into a religious mindset that says we can't say certain things to God. Before we say anything to other people, we should make sure to say something to God.

2. Say something to yourself.

What might have changed if Adam or Abraham had paused and had a little self talk before making such life-altering decisions? There are things that only we can say to ourselves. In 1 Samuel 30:6 David encouraged himself in the Lord. God has a lot to say about us. He says that we are the head and not the tail, a child of God, a royal priesthood. We need to start saying positive things over ourselves. Sometimes we need to bless ourselves. Our feelings can lie to us, so we need to speak clearly to ourselves about ourselves. We don't have to wait on somebody else to bless or encourage us; God has already spoken. We need to encourage ourselves.

3. Say something to others.

Hebrews 3:13 tells us to encourage one another daily. 1 Thessalonians 5:16 tells us to build each other up. We are more connected than any other generation, and yet more isolated than ever before. Technology has both connected us and isolated us simultaneously. There are miracles in our mouths, and we have a choice to speak life and encourage others. We should not discount the power of our words. Our words can lift and strengthen others. We can be a miracle to others.

4. Say something to your future.

Jeremiah 29:11 the Lord tells us he has plans to give us a hope and a future. When we believe that God has a hope and a future for us, and we begin to speak towards that hope and future, it is powerful. We have the power of life and death in our tongues. We don't need to wait on other people to say something about our future; we can say something about our future. We can say what God has said--that we are blessed and highly favored.

Reflection/Discussion Questions:

1. Have you spoken to God in prayer about the current situations and decisions in your life?

2. How can you speak to yourself this week with the words and promises that God says about you?

3. How can you speak to others in your life this week to encourage and lift them up?

4. How can you speak the miracles and promises of God over your future this week?
