The Storms of Life
The Storm Life
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”
Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)
Just as in nature, storms are inevitable in our lives. We are predisposed to experience different kinds of storms such as relational, spiritual, or financial storms. The storms of life don’t show favoritism. They come to anyone regardless of their age, status, or race. However, as believers we are encouraged to have a firm understanding of God’s word and learn how to navigate these struggles in life.
We can’t allow the storms to define our lives, but rather we want how we get through the storms to define our lives. While facing the storms of life, it is essential to remember the following:
Don’t delay
If we’re alert, aware, or proactive, we will be able to see the warning signs of the storms coming in our lives. God will always provide a way of escape or a place of refuge. Why would we wait until a crisis comes to look for God and change our lifestyle? Don’t wait until it is too late. Be aware of God's voice. He has plans for us.
2. Don’t deny
We need to face our reality no matter how unpleasant it is. Faith is not a denial of problems. Faith is the confidence that God is with us, and we can overcome the storms of life.
3. Don’t drift
Anchors at sea during heavy wind and rain can protect us from drifting. When we face difficult situations, we tend to drift from church, community, and even family. It is in a stormy season when we are most vulnerable to make wrong decisions, so it is necessary to find the support in the right people around us.
4. Don’t discard
While struggling in a storm of life, there’s always some things that we need to discard to make our load lighter and keep our boat afloat. Romans 12:9 encourages us to cling to what is good. It is in God that we find what is good.
5. Don’t despair
We can experience the storms of the season's transitions, but we can’t lose hope. We need to look up. In Acts 27:23, we see at least three things that produce hope and confidence in the worst or darkest part of the storm: awareness of God’s presence, awareness of God’s purpose, and awareness of God’s promise.
Even in the worst storm of life, we can have the confidence that we are not only with God but also that God is with us.
Prayer: Lord, help us to overcome the storms in our lives. We pray for a community to help us from drifting. Father, help us to make the right decisions in our lives, especially during tough times. We know you are with us, God. Amen.
