Day 1: Fasting as a Lifestyle
“But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” MATTHEW 6:17-18 (NIV)
During Jesus’ ministry, he taught His disciples key principles about God’s kingdom. In Matthew 6, Jesus gives us direction on how to live as victorious children of God and experience the spiritual purpose He has for each of us. He said, “when you give…” “when you pray…” and “when you fast.” Throughout the chapter, Jesus made it clear that fasting was just as important as giving and praying. But how many of us fast on a regular basis?
Too often, fasting is seen as an ancient ritual, even though Jesus saw it as a lifestyle. He fasted during his earthly ministry and expected His disciples to do the same. As followers of Jesus, we are called to follow His example. Fasting in obedience to God’s Word will allow us to experience His power in our lives.
Over the next 21 days, we want to invite you to have a posture of expectancy. We believe God will use these upcoming days to provide spiritual purpose and divine direction for your life. Your Father who sees what is done in secret will surely reward you.
On your first day of fasting, remember:
● Fasting is a lifestyle. Jesus fasted, and you’re called to follow His example.
● When you fast in obedience to God’s Word, you see God’s power in your life.
● God will use these upcoming days to provide spiritual purpose and divine direction.
Prayer Focus:
Thank your Heavenly Father for the blessings He provides during a fast. Ask God to help you obey and fully surrender to Him during this fast. Tell God you believe that He will move powerfully in your life as you commit the next 21 days to Him.
Reflection Question: What are you believing God for during this 21-day fast?
